My Morning Routine January 08, 18
How does the old saying go? “Look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed!” Growing up I struggled with getting up and finding my energy in the morning. It was tough for me and as I learned more about my body and overall health, I understood that establishing a good, solid routine in the morning can be the trigger you need to stay on the right track for the rest of the day.
So for me, I try to follow a pretty consistent routine. My morning typically consists of four simple activities that get me ready for my day. It’s nothing magical – it’s simply logical, and it helps me get ready for a long day of intense physical work.
Play my music. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed is find the music that fits the mood for me at that moment. It typically has a lot of energy and wakes me up. If you ask my wife, I probably play it a little too loudly, but it's my wakeup call and it gets me moving.
Immediately start drinking water. The body dehydrates overnight since you go eight hours without any liquids. So, I immediately start drinking water or tea to get my muscles hydrated and functioning. P.tip - I love adding lemon, ginger, cucumber or mint to my water if I need an extra boost.
Stretch. After the music has woken up my soul a bit and the water wakes up my muscles, I start to move. I don't do anything intense, but I stretch and keep moving for at least 20 minutes. It helps build up my energy.
Eat. It baffles me how many people I work with or train who don't give their body nutrients in the morning. I am extremely physical in my day job so I know I have to feed my body in order to keep my energy up all day and through my classes at night.
I am a big quinoa fan so one of my favorite recipes is something I call the P.volve Enhanced Quinoa Breakfast Bowl. It’s perfect for me because it’s light and filled with the nutrients my body is craving in the morning. Here's the recipe:
1. Prepare 3/4 cup of quinoa, cooking as directed on the packaging.
2. Combine it with the following ingredients, mixing together in a single bowl:
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
4 oz of unsweetened coconut milk
1 cup of raw blackberries
1/2 oz of unsweetened dried coconut meat and mixed raw nuts of your choosing
